Tarmac, the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions business, has successfully retained the highest possible rating for responsible sourcing by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

The company maintained its ‘excellent’ performance score as part of its continued certification to BES 6001, the Standard for Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.

The rating was given following a rigorous recertification audit process, which included detailed assessment of performance across all of its product lines as well as visits to twelve sites across Tarmac’s UK-wide operations. It was also able to improve the rating for Ash products which are now also rated as ‘Excellent’.

Certification to BES 6001 not only ensures that risk can be minimised across the supply chain, but also provides customers with added reassurance about the sustainability of the products they are buying.

Andy Swain, senior manager for sustainability at Tarmac, said: “There is increasing demand for responsibly sourced construction materials to help maximise the points projects can score in building sustainability schemes such as BREEAM, CEEQUAL and LEED.

“Customers recognise the important role that this certification plays in meeting their environmental, health, safety and welfare ambitions and, for Tarmac, it helps us benchmark how and what we produce and ensure that we can work to continuously improve our products. Retaining our ‘excellent’ rating supports ensures we’re continuing to meet our customers’ expectations for responsibly sourced construction materials.”

Responsible Sourcing certification is reliant upon a company being able to demonstrate its commitment to managing its environmental, social and economic impacts across the supply chain in a responsible and ethical way. This ranges from waste management and legal compliance to site stewardship, transportation and climate change.

BES 6001 is a Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products that sets out the requirements against which construction products can be independently assessed and certified as responsibly sourced. It has been developed by BRE and is the leading scheme for responsibly sourced materials.
