about us

Tarmac, a CRH company, is the UK’s leading sustainable building products and construction solutions business. Our innovative products, services and solutions help to deliver the infrastructure needed to grow the economy today and create a more sustainable built environment to support our future prosperity.

With over 150 years of experience we have a breadth of capability and expertise that covers aggregates (including recycled aggregates), asphalt, readymix concrete, cement, lime and powders, mortars, screeds blocks and other building products. Our products are used to build the future, making things better for people, the planet and the UK economy, from building new homes and offices to building schools, hospitals, bridges, roads and flood defences. Some are also used to make other essential products such as steel, paper, glass and drinking water.

In addition, we provide road maintenance and contracting services, surfacing more than 4,800 miles of road in the UK each year, and maintaining a further 13,600 miles of the local road network annually.

With our head office in Solihull in the West Midlands, we operate from more than 400 strategically located sites across the UK and have stewardship of some 100,000 acres of land. We are also a significant UK employer, with a staff complement of around 7,200 people. Tarmac is a wholly owned subsidiary of CRH plc.

Changes to our business in 2017

We have continued to grow our business with focused growth and a number of targeted investments across our UK portfolio. 2017 saw J B Riney Limited, one of London’s most respected civil engineering and highway maintenance contractors, join Tarmac’s Contracting business, and ScotAsh, previously a joint venture between Tarmac and Scottish Power, become wholly owned by Tarmac and integrated fully into our Cement and Lime business. We also completed the purchase of another joint venture company, Newhaven Roadstone Ltd. Newhaven Roadstone, supplies asphalt and aggregates to customers in East Sussex. During the year we took the opportunity to restructure some parts of the business. Our newly formed Materials business unit brings together our Aggregates & Asphalt and Readymix Concrete teams to create a new business unit that will enable Tarmac to get closer to our customers, build stronger relationships and deliver the right level of service to customers.

We have also continued to integrate our business processes with the wider CRH group, aligning our business strategy and approach with CRH’s four strategic imperatives: Continuous improvement, disciplined and focused growth, extracting the benefits of scale and leadership development.

During the year Tarmac also completed the acquisition of Alun Griffiths Contractors, a civil engineering business based in Wales and acquired 27 readymix concrete sites and a marine aggregates wharf from Breedon as part of an asset swap agreement of four aggregate sites and one asphalt plant transferring to Breedon. Further information about these exciting acquisitions will be provided next year as part of our 2018 report.
