New 3D model predicts Dunbar minerals

Colleagues at Dunbar cement works are looking to the future, thanks to the creation of a new 3D model.


The Geology department used the concept of popular video game Minecraft to build the model using blocks. Each block has its content of chemical elements mathematically estimated, including iron, sulphur and magnesium.

By creating the model the geology team has been able to more accurately predict the quality of limestone being quarried.

Sam Lawrence, geologist, said: “The 3D model has been created to help the quarry and cement plant teams to develop their plans for the future mineral extraction.

“By calculating the quality of minerals in each block we are be able to keep costs down and be class leading with environmental compliance.”
